Roller Derby (Revisited)

(Hopefully I got the videos working now!)

A few weeks ago we went on an outing to the Medford Armory. One of Jason's patients from Cave Junction is a member of a ladies' roller derby team, and she invited us to watch her sister play. We hadn't ever been before, and once we caught on, it was really interesting and fun to watch.
In a quick description and a photo from Wikipedia,"Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ("jams") in which both teams designate a scoring player (the "jammer") who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer —in effect playing both offense and defense simultaneously."

Derek waited until I was video taping a jam to climb all over me. Every time I tried to tape, the boys would maul me, so I gave up trying to get better footage.

During intermission there were break dancers performing. I was sad that I couldn't video all of it, there were some pretty neat moves that I missed, but I did get a few really short clips.

Despite the different crowd there to watch, we really enjoyed ourselves, (especially with a win from our Southern Oregon Rollergirls), and the kids want to go again. I think the next one isn't until St. Patrick's Day, but I have a Relief Society activity. I'm not sure if Jason plans on taking the kids.

Do you have a local roller derby team?

Loved the videos but what I loved most about them was the running commentary in the background from the little ones! Too cute! Very exciting stuff obviously! :)

Jason was telling me about this! Roller derby is BIG here! There are both American and Japanese teams! I personally think it looks a little rough! I agree with Grandma, that chatter was cute!!
