Reading with dogs

Every Friday our library gives kids the opportunity to read to dogs.

Makayla was at the Boys and Girls Club with Taylor. They had a "Fun Day" with things like bouncy castles, water activities, and they could invite a friend. Makayla was so excited that Taylor invited her! (I was very glad she remembered to ask permission before telling her friend that she could!) Taylor came by Thursday night while we were at the temple. Makayla was very helpful to the babysitter. I was impressed with how well she took phone messages, and called to ask permission about eating ice cream...Only two more years!! Actually, Taylor's Mom was saying that she had done some research and in Oregon kids can babysit when they're 10! She was surprised! (There was also a strong reminder about child neglect laws as well). I'm not quite ready to let Makayla have full reign in the babysitting department yet, but it's getting a little easier to give her more freedoms, and responsibilities. It's bittersweet to see her able to handle the bigger responsibilities, and realize how much more rope I really should give her! I guess I'm a little bit in denial about how grown up she's becoming, or is it, I'm trying to keep her little, and it's just not working?!!

We had to return some videos, and Malia wanted to go to the library as soon as it opened. When we got there, Derek was drawn to this boxer named Oscar. He scarcely left his side. One of the ladies that brought two of the dogs noticed, thought Derek was so cute with him, and she asked if she could take a picture of them on her phone. I wished I had brought my camera! She was so sweet and emailed these to me.

Jason had the hugest grin on his face when I told him, about how seeing the boys with the dogs was softening me in their favor. I'm not fully won over to the get a dog side. The reality of the work still has a very strong hold on me :) ! I guess only time will tell!

I feel your pain about letting kids grow up! I am slowly letting Jacob cut the apron strings but it is so hard! We let him stay home alone for short periods of time with strict no computer, no outside, no answering the door rules and he has done great! He hates running errands with me so it makes both our lives better!I am thinking I may let him start watching the girls but I am afraid of what the girls will get in to not how well Jacob will do watching them. LOL
ps My advice about the dog...get a CAT! So much easier to take care of!

Wow, won't that be great when Makayla is old enough to babysit!! I can't wait but I can understand how hard it would be to place that trust. I won't say anything about dogs since I'm the one trying to talk Jer into it :-)
